Singles in America: Dating Etiquette

By Whitney Casey, Match.com Relationship Expert

When it comes to dating, there’s one thing that connects all daters to one another: their cellphone. But are you having phone foreplay — or making phone fouls? Here are seven do’s and don’ts of cellphone etiquette to help you rule wireless dating!

#1 Selfies

Know thy self(ie): While more than the majority of men report loving any type of visual interaction (sexy or sweet photos), the majority of women say sexy photos and selfies are major phone fouls. 75% of women rank sexy photos as their number-one foul, while 76% of men rank it as their number-one phone foreplay!

#2 Emoticons

Save the slang: Both sexes overwhelmingly welcome that sunny smiley face or dancing icon, but when it comes to LMAO, that’s just L-A-M-E! So emoticon away ☺, but stay away from slang that needs decoding.

#3 Text Timing

Text timing is everything: Opposites attract when it comes to the timing of texts. While 63% of women find texting during work hours to be full-on phone foreplay, the majority of men cry phone foul on that play. Lunchtime love is for the ladies, but men prefer to stay textless from 9-5, ranking “texting during work hours” second in their top three phone fouls.

#4 Text Tempo

Be trained in text tempo: Both sexes agree, a major phone foul is being too quick on the draw when firingoff your “phone fingers.” Just wait for it... sending a second text before getting a reply is a “for sure” faux pas. Nearly 60% of men say texting too soon with no reply is their number-one phone foul, while women rank it in their top three fouls.

#5 Contacts

Cast a wide net: When it comes to contacting more than one man, the ladies love lining it up. For 2014, single women say the more (dates) the merrier: 72% say that it is ok to casually date more than one person at the same time, and 60% of men agree!

#6 Drama

Save the drama for your mama: It seems the sexes agree on all fronts: prolific posts can land you leaving your relationship status on “single,” since 84% of women and 80% of men say airing emotional drama or chronicling personal life details on social media will leave you dateless.

#7 Video Chat

Say hi with your eyes: Video chat is set to dominate future phone foreplay. Nearly half of singles in their 20s are already using this up-to-date technology to keep in touch with their dates.
