Holidating: This Season, Why Not Give The Gift of Charity? By Kristan Turns

“Holidating” is an ongoing Match.com blog series focusing on data from a recent Match.com survey on singles and the holiday season. Stay tuned for more posts examining the data in the upcoming week!

With the lights hung and ornaments arranged, shoppers discover themselves at that point in the season where they’ve begun frantically hunting for gifts to place under trees. But what to buy?? The determination to find “The Perfect Present” certainly affects many whose holidays are deeply rooted in the tradition of gift-giving.

Singles aren’t immune to the seasonal chaos of overcrowded shopping mall parking lots. 45% look forward to giving gifts to others as their favorite holiday tradition, but might encounter a tricky tightrope when selecting just the right items. After only a few dates, most women are unlikely to expect a diamond tiara, and it might be a very lopsided exchange if she elects to give her partner a “glad-we’re-friends” card. Fortunately, there’s a great solution to avoiding this kind of mess while also celebrating the season of giving: donating to a charitable cause.

No matter whether a relationship is four days old or has blossomed over many decades, remembering others who are less fortunate is always a worthy experience, and there’s a deserving non-profit group for just about any cause your significant other appreciates. Utilizing a shopping trip together to fulfill the angel tree wishes of a child or senior citizen can be a fantastic way to learn more about each other. If a date loves cuddly puppies and kittens, animal rescues desperately need volunteers to perform everything from walking dogs to bottle-feeding kittens. During this time, homeless shelters need coats, blankets, and shoes — all items easily collected and delivered in an afternoon. Believe it or not, a weekend getaway to the amazingly beautiful Bahamas could include lending services to a group that rebuilds homes for impoverished Hurricane Sandy victims. The possibilities never end.

Maybe ladling soup for three hours doesn’t fit into the romantic picture? That’s okay. There are plenty of other ways to give back without sacrificing time that’s generally spent at dinner and a movie. Charities often accept donations bestowed in the name of a third party and offer a card or certificate of gratitude. Instead of buying that aforementioned diamond tiara for a new date, why not opt to build a learning center for underprivileged kids? If the act of giving a physical token is more appealing, needy groups often sell items online and at events to benefit their missions. Some retailers even agree to donate a percentage of sales as proceeds to charitable organizations.

Offering time, services, and donation dollars toward a kindhearted cause during this crazy, gift-swapping bonanza doubles as an excellent way to truly participate in holiday tradition without furrowing any brain cells worrying about what to wrap. A lasting relationship fosters strength through shared experiences. Shopping wisely and spending moments together as if they’re precious dollars builds holiday experiences worthy of celebrating for every couple at every level.
